Quick Facts About Castlegate Fish & Chip Restaurant
Castlegate Fish & Chip Restaurant has a mix of strengths and weaknesses based on the comments provided. Starting with the strengths, customers praise the restaurant for its authentic old-school chip shop atmosphere and the quality of the fish and chips. The portion sizes are described as huge, with the chips being crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The fish is also highlighted for having a lovely crispy batter. These positive reviews indicate that the restaurant has a strong reputation for traditional fish and chips, which would likely appeal to locals and visitors alike.
Another strength mentioned in the comments is the affordability. The pensioners deal, priced at £9.95, is described as worth every penny. This suggests that the restaurant offers reasonable prices, particularly for the quality and quantity of food provided in the deal. Affordability is an important factor for many customers, and this positive feedback may attract more budget-conscious diners.
In terms of weaknesses, one recurring issue is the delivery time. Multiple comments express dissatisfaction with the length of time it took for the food to be delivered. One customer mentions waiting over an hour, while another mentions a two-hour wait and having to cancel the order. Slow delivery can be frustrating for customers, especially if they are hungry and looking forward to their meal. This negative feedback indicates that the restaurant may need to improve their delivery service or provide more accurate estimates to avoid disappointing customers.
Another weakness mentioned is the quality of certain menu items. One customer was disappointed with the chicken parm, describing it as bland with congealed white sauce and strange-tasting cheese. The chips that came with the meal were also described as greasy and having a funky grease taste. These negative reviews suggest that there may be inconsistency in the preparation and quality of some dishes. Ensuring consistency and improving the taste of certain menu items would be important for maintaining customer satisfaction.
Other weaknesses include issues with portion sizes and the lack of vinegar taste on the fish and chips. One customer mentions receiving only small bits of fish despite ordering a full meal, while another customer complains about not being able to taste the extra vinegar they requested. These comments suggest that the restaurant may need to improve portion control and ensure that condiments are adequately applied to meet customer expectations.
Finally, a customer mentions that the chips were below average and the chicken shawarma was poor. The chips were described as hard and dried out, indicating a lack of freshness and potentially undercooked preparation. The chicken shawarma was criticized for being dry and lacking flavor, necessitating the addition of lots of chili sauce to make it enjoyable. These negative reviews suggest that the restaurant may need to pay closer attention to the quality of their side dishes and non-fish menu options.
In conclusion, Castlegate Fish & Chip Restaurant has its strengths in terms of traditional fish and chips, a loyal local customer base, and affordable prices. However, there are weaknesses in areas such as delivery times, consistency in food quality, portion sizes, and the taste of certain menu items. Addressing these weaknesses would be important for improving overall customer satisfaction and maintaining a strong reputation in the local market.
Best TL Reviews
We were visiting Berwick for a few hours. We wanted some fish and chips, found this place. A nice old school chip shop with seats down the side. A huge portion, great chips, crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Lovely fish with very crispy batter. All very good.
If I was local I would happily use this place regularly.
Food: 4/10
Price: £
Delivery time: 6/10
This is my first time trying the takeaway since the new renovation. I had heard many people talking about the chicken parms so was looking forward to trying.
I ordered easily online; an original chicken parm, deep fried jalapeños with cheese and pineapple rings with syrup, being quoted half an hour delivery time. My order arrived over an hour later.
I ate the jalapeño poppers first, surprised to see there being lettuce in the box, which made the batter of the poppers extremely soggy. They were still nice tasting though.
I was unfortunately not so impressed with the chicken parm. The white sauce was congealed and the cheese was a strange tasting cheddar.
None of which really had any semblance of taste. It was extremely bland, offset with the odd cheese taste. The chips that came with the parm were even less pleasant; greasy, with a funky grease taste.
The pineapple rings were alright, however again, not the best quality pineapple.
I am honestly disappointed with what I had anticipated to be an enjoyable meal.
Pensioners deal. £9-95. Fish and chips, curry sauce,or peas, bread and butter and pot of tea. Worth every penny.
Ordered cod n chips and was given 2 scrappy bits of fish. Asked for extra vinegar and saw the guy pour loads on buy couldn't taste any on the food. Charged £2.30 for bottle of pop takeaway. Is a better chippy just up the road.
Edit: ***“‼️DO NOT DO DELIVERY, YOU WILL BE WAITING HOURS & LEFT HUNGRY”***‼️
MY FAMILY AND I HAD TO CANCEL AS WE WERE LEFT HUNGRY AND AFTER ALMOST 2HOURS OF WAIT OUR HOPE FOR OUR FOOD TO BE DELIVERED WAS AT ZERO!
****“DO NOT DO DELIVERY WITH THIS PLACE”***
“WASTE OF MINE AND MY FAMILYS TIME”
“NOW WAITING FOR OUR REFUND” (probably wait years for that too)
DISAPPOINTED! TIME KEPT GOING UP AND TAKING WAY LONGER THEN ANY DELIVERY MEAL SHOULD EVER TAKE!
NOT THE PROPER I WAS EXPECTING ????
This was my (hope) for delivery ????????
(New Zealander visiting) i was told that this place was a go to for fish n chips I was told that it’s “proper” however going off of recent reviews I’m not hopeful that I’ll be receiving my meals in a timely manner. We’ve been waiting over an hour now. Very disappointing! I’m hopeful that the wait will be worth it!
Very poor chicken shawarma. Cold shavings of dried out chicken. If you are ordering this, get lots of chilli sauce to add a bit of moisture and flavour. It didn't poison me though ????
Chips were also below average.
Fish was decent, but the chips weren't great, and it wasn't cheap for what we got. We ordered chips and a half-size fish portion each, but got a measly smattering of (not great) chips, and it still set us back nearly £20.
Really poor I'm afraid, worst chippie I've been to in years. 35 minute wait for fish and chips, the fish was ok, the chips were inedible, hard and dried out, had obviously been sitting for a very long time. No dedicated fryer so one person trying to serve and cook is not going to work.
