Quick Facts About The Eight Bells

The Eight Bells pub has several strengths that make it an appealing destination for patrons. Firstly, it is described as a "great little pub" that exudes old-school charm. This nostalgic atmosphere appeals to those seeking a traditional pub experience. Additionally, the pub offers a wide selection of beers, both real ale and local beer, catering to beer enthusiasts and supporting local brewers.
The outdoor beer garden is another strength of The Eight Bells. With picnic benches and a patio garden, patrons can enjoy their drinks in an al fresco setting. This feature is particularly attractive during warmer days and provides an alternative space for socializing and relaxation.
Furthermore, the pub is praised for its cozy indoor seating and the presence of a fire on colder days. This creates a warm and inviting ambiance, making the pub a comfortable and enjoyable place to spend time. The availability of newspapers near the fireplace is also a nice touch, allowing patrons to relax and read while enjoying their drinks.
The character of the landlord is mentioned as a strength of The Eight Bells. Being personable and sharing the patrons' appreciation for a clean pint of ale or beer establishes a positive connection between the staff and customers. Such personal interactions can enhance the overall experience and create a welcoming atmosphere.
The pub's location, just opposite St Lawrence's Church, contributes to its charm and historical feel. Being situated in a quiet area adds to the appeal for those seeking a peaceful and relaxed pub environment. Additionally, the pub's proximity to a public car park makes it easily accessible for visitors and provides a convenient parking option.
The friendliness and welcoming nature of the staff is also mentioned as a strength. Good service and a warm reception can greatly enhance the overall customer experience, encouraging repeat visits and positive word-of-mouth recommendations.
Despite these strengths, The Eight Bells does have some weaknesses that may impact its appeal to certain demographics. It is mentioned that hardly any younger people drink at the pub, suggesting that it may not cater to the preferences and tastes of younger generations. This can impact the pub's vibrancy and diversity of patrons.
Another weakness highlighted is the limited opening hours. Currently, the pub only operates from 12-2pm and 5-11pm. The comment suggests that extending the opening hours, particularly during the afternoon, would be beneficial, especially when the weather is pleasant and patrons could enjoy the back courtyard. This limitation may deter potential customers who prefer to visit pubs during different hours.
Additionally, the suggestion that the courtyard could benefit from a tidy up indicates that the outdoor space may require maintenance. This can detract from the overall appeal and may discourage patrons from fully enjoying the beer garden.
While some comments mention that the pub serves food, others imply that it does not. This lack of clarity regarding the availability of food can be a weakness for potential customers who prioritize dining options when choosing a pub.
In conclusion, The Eight Bells possesses several strengths that make it an attractive pub for those seeking an old school atmosphere, a great beer selection, a cozy indoor seating area, and a friendly landlord. However, it does have some weaknesses, including limited opening hours, a lack of younger patrons, potential maintenance issues in the courtyard, and uncertainty regarding the provision of food. By addressing these weaknesses, the pub could further enhance its appeal and attract a wider range of customers.

Great little pub - proper old school. Great selection of beers, outdoor beer garden, cosy indoor seating.
On colder days there's always a fire on the go. Definitely recommended
The landlord is such a character. Like me he also enjoys a nice clean pint of Ale/beer. This you will get at the pub
The Eight Bells (formerly the Sawyers Arms) is a lovely old fashioned, quiet pub in Church Street,Alton opposite St Lawrence's Church. It us open 12-2pm and 5-11pm.
You go straight in from the street with no parking. But there is a public car park nearby. With the 8 Bells on your left take the next turning left into a housing estate, then turn right into the car park. It's just a short walk from the pub.
There is a reasonable size outside area with picnic benches.
The staff are friendly and welcoming.
Dogs are welcome.
Real ale and local ale are available.
There are newspapers available to read while sitting near the real fire.
I'm not sure if it serves food. I was there for refreshments after a funeral and we had sandwiches.
But if you want a good, quiet pub which serves excellent beer The Eight Bells is for you.
This a real ale pub with no food. Hardly any younger people drink there. Currently the pub is open 12 till 2pm then 5pm onwards. Would be better if open between 2 and 5pm while any sunshine is in attendance out in the back courtyard, talking of which could do with a good tidy up!
Lovely little pub, friendly service!
What a wonderful pub. Great atmosphere generated by the friendly landlord and barman. We were only visiting for the weekend and liked it so much in there, we went back a second night
Lovely pub, great landlord, steeped in history which the landlord told us about, great selection of beers, nice patio garden with shelter n heaters for smokers, lovely atmosphere would recommend
Lovely little pub with a warm welcome, plenty of period features and good range of ales. The pub's carpet is very clean and has a great classic pub patters. If you get a chance try to sit in the little nook. The fire is a inter war classic design with exposed brick work. Toilets: unflashy and clean.
