Quick Facts About The Plaice in the Square
The Plaice in the Square has received a mix of positive and negative comments that highlight both its strengths and weaknesses. In analyzing these comments, it is clear that the restaurant has some areas where it excels and others where it falls short.
Starting with the positives, several comments praised the quality of the food. One customer described it as "very good," and another mentioned the "fabulous chips." These comments indicate that the restaurant has a strong focus on the quality of its ingredients and cooking techniques. Additionally, the comment about the generous portions suggests that customers feel they are getting good value for their money.
Another strength highlighted by a customer is the friendly and attentive staff. This is an important factor in creating a positive dining experience, as good service can greatly enhance a meal. The fact that the staff is able to provide attentive service even during busy times is commendable and shows that they are well-trained and efficient.
Furthermore, the cozy atmosphere of the outdoor seating area was appreciated by one customer. This suggests that the restaurant has created a comfortable and inviting space for customers to relax and enjoy their meals. A warm evening was specifically mentioned, indicating that the outdoor area is well-suited for such occasions.
On the other hand, the comments also reveal several weaknesses of The Plaice in the Square. One of the most significant negative comments was about the fish and chips, which was described as the "worst" and "dry." The mention of the fish possibly sitting since Monday suggests that the quality of the ingredients and the freshness of the food may be inconsistent. Additionally, the negative feedback about the chips being too crispy and overcooked also raises concerns about the consistency of the cooking.
Another weakness mentioned by multiple customers is the lack of atmosphere in the restaurant. It was described as "quiet" and "average," suggesting that the ambiance is not particularly memorable or unique. Creating a vibrant and engaging atmosphere is important for attracting and retaining customers, and it seems that The Plaice in the Square falls short in this aspect.
In terms of pricing, opinions were divided. One customer deemed it "toppy," indicating that they perceived the prices as high for a local fish and chips shop. However, another customer felt that the food was worth the price, particularly praising the quality of the chips. This discrepancy suggests that the restaurant may need to consider how it justifies its pricing to ensure that customers feel they are receiving value for their money.
Lastly, the limited space between tables was mentioned as a negative aspect. This suggests that the restaurant may feel cramped or crowded, potentially impacting the comfort and overall dining experience of customers.
In conclusion, The Plaice in the Square has both strengths and weaknesses based on customer comments. The restaurant excels in terms of food quality, generous portions, friendly staff, and a cozy outdoor seating area. However, it falls short in areas such as consistency of food preparation, lack of atmosphere, potentially higher pricing for a local establishment, and limited table spacing. By addressing these weaknesses, the restaurant can work towards improving the overall dining experience and attracting more customers.

Stopped here for cocktails on a Saturday evening. The place was fairly quiet, not much atmosphere, and the cocktails were OK but nothing special. Sat in the outsized area in the back which is quite cosy as it was a very warm evening. It wasn't bad but I wouldn't rush back!
Just had the worst fish&chip in my life
The fish was so dry it was almost dessicated. Must have been sitting there since Monday, the chips were not far behind in their execution, both figuratively and literally.
Maybe a Friday evening is the wrong time to expect respect for the two main ingredients,
The food here was very good and the staff were both attentive and friendly. Food came at a respectable pace despite it being a busy time. Unfortunate that my first choice was not available anymore.
Came here for roast, nothing special very average . Chicken was dry . Ok price though . Also pub does not have much atmosphere. Could do better
Thought the prices were a bit toppy for a local fish and chips shop. However it was worth every penny the chips were massive and probably the best I’ve ever had.
Shame it’s not closer to home.
I go here most Wednesdays to collect fish and chips when my mother in law visits. It's our favourite chip shop, they are always really friendly and give very generous portions. The food is always cooked fresh and tastes great.
Small but good quality food, loved the garlic bread. Just needs more space between tables as its a bit tight
Fabulous chips ! Battered haddock needed 10mins more to cook batter but quarter chicken needed 10 mins less as could use as a brick . Will not be back !
