Best TL Reviews

Perfect Sunday lunch location. Cosy, nice food, pleasant atmosphere. Pork roast was excellent, bread and butter pudding is to die for. A pub that starts their extensive list of puddings with bread and butter pudding is a rare find these days, but a really good sign, as proven here. Hoping to return soon again.
Really nice visit.
The place is completely different inside to what you think it will be, it's a high quality fresh modern refurb. Immaculate and we'll spaced out.
Staff were all very friendly and welcoming. Very grateful they managed to fit us in on a Sunday!!
Food was excellent - Real high quality ingredients and presentation.
The roast was on the 9/10 scale for me.
The meat was sliced perfectly and was soft to eat, no tough or fatty bits.
Absolutely no complaints on food.
All in all great visit and definitely will be coming back here again.
Highly recommended and advise to call and book so not to be disappointed.
Food good, although fish and chips, a little greasy. Plenty of menu choices, including vegetarian options. The staff were great! Very obliging in helping with a surprise birthday cake. Definitely recommend a visit. We booked an early table, so not too busy. But gets quite busy later in the evening.
I've been going to this pub for many years, the food is always excellent, great beer selection and the staff are all so kind. Always a good time at the coach and horses. They are also always so helpful with my mum's gluten intolerance.
Had a lovely family lunch here on Saturday. The food was lovely and a good varied menu. Staff all very friendly. Particularly liked the children’s menu .. all freshly cooked and not your usual frozen children’s menus. Would recommend and look forward to our next visit.
Went with my family for a celebratory drink where we were warmly met and shown to a table. The pub was really busy when we called which was nice to see and experience. A great evening out. Well done the landlord(s) at The Coach and Horses Newport
Brilliantly welcoming and so helpful. Jon the landlord went out of his way to help me in the snowy icy carpark - so friendly and helpful. This was my first visit - I shall be a regular customer. Thank you so much again.
This review is for the Coach & Horses in Newport.
First impressions: A nice clean establishment, adequate parking and spacing between tables.
Proprietor: Jon is very accommodating and welcoming.
Service: Appears to be a bit slow and a bit haphazard sometimes. A lack of cohesion with the young staff is more apparent the busier it gets. The staff are mostly charming and helpful but might make mistakes, forget, or weirdly leave you with a fork and knife where a spoon is required! One waitress has a bit of condescending back chat personality. Could be perceived as a little passive aggressive, the sort of character one would expect to encounter at a building site canteen.
Dress code: Some of the young female staff dress like they're working at an outdoors Summer event or about to go clubbing after their shift. For example, excessively ripped blue jeans with half of their bare legs showing, crop tops with large mid drift on display revealing jewel encrusted pieced navel. For the venue and the prices this place charges, dress code to us is inappropriate. White on black would be better. It would cover up the flesh and would also distinguish those that are quests and those that are staff, especially when they're huddled in a corner chatting in the bar area and you’re looking around trying to figure out who to ask for assistance.
Food: The pretentious description of the food v's what is served can lead to below expectations. Compared to some other pubs, C&H does not leave one with a feeling of good value for money. Price per meal is average but portion size is below average. OK if you’re a lady careful with her wieght, or a hamster, but not for a working man that could easily eat the serving twice/3x.
Starters: ~£9-£10 and the portions are miserly small. For example the King prawn starter is six battered pieces, three battered prawns, with three slivers of battered avocado. The prawns were way too hot and spicy to the point it left lips burning so won’t be to everyone’s taste. You’re better off sucking on a boiled sweet and waiting for your main dish to arrive because you won’t feel any different.
Main dish: Overall, in comparison to other establishments, like the starters, overpriced for what was actually served.
Sunday Roast: When the Yorkshire pudding dominates the dish, you know at this point you’re going to leave feeling like you’re going to need to eat when you get home. Meat was wafer thin and not much of it, three small chunks of dried out potato, with a shared mediocre unseasoned overcooked veg platter. Yorkshire pudding was perfect but let down by a mean smear of gravy under the food. A gravy boat should have come with the dish to hydrate the food. It's not your Mum's Sunday roast by any means!
Desserts: Sometimes deviated too far from familiarity. They bear the name but bear little resemblance to the traditional dish. For example the Bread&butter pudding, one of the cheapest easiest most filling deserts to make, was an overcomplicated overpriced bland peculiar tasting squared of dry stodge desperately in need of custard or cream to moisten the dish. The £8 Eton mess was a bloody mess. A peculiar mix of barely unidentifiable mush. Desserts may be left half eaten. If you're going to serve something very different, use a different name for the dessert.
Bar: Lacks traditional pub atmosphere. Lack of soft furnishings in the bar side can make it noisy in that area so don’t dine on that side if they’re short on seating in the main restaurant or you could find yourself shouting across the table.
Rating: High scores are easy to obtain if just drinks or take out v’s sit in food and drink so the current high rating is a bit misleading from our experience. A few small changes could make a big difference but as it is, no more than average.
