Quick Facts About White Hart Hotel

The White Hart Hotel, based on the comments provided, has both strengths and weaknesses. This analysis aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the hotel's positives and negatives.
Starting with the strengths, one of the first positive comments is that the hotel has a charming atmosphere reminiscent of an old grandmother. This suggests that the hotel has a unique and cozy ambiance that appeals to some guests. Additionally, the presence of a fireplace in the reception area adds to this atmosphere and creates a warm and welcoming environment.
Another strength mentioned is the hotel's location, which is described as perfect. Being located close to Newhaven Port is beneficial for guests who need easy access to embark on ferry trips. Additionally, the proximity to good restaurants in the area is seen as a positive aspect, allowing guests to conveniently explore dining options.
The value for money is another strength highlighted in the comments. Despite not having a restaurant serving hot cooked food, the bed and breakfast option is seen as good value fare. This suggests that the hotel offers affordable accommodations, making it an attractive choice for budget-conscious travelers.
The historical significance of the hotel is also mentioned as a strength. The connection to Thomas Paine, a renowned Revolutionary, adds a sense of privilege and pride to staying at the White Hart Inn. The fact that the hotel staff allows guests to explore the wood-paneled room where Paine used to meet is seen as a positive and unique experience.
However, the White Hart Hotel does face several weaknesses and areas for improvement. One of the most common criticisms is the general state of disrepair. Guests mention worn-out rooms, ripped curtains, and hanging curtains. This indicates a lack of maintenance and attention to detail, which negatively impacts the overall impression of the hotel.
Cleanliness is also a major issue raised in the comments. Bloodstains on mattresses and floors that have not been cleaned in years are particularly concerning observations. These issues significantly affect the hygiene and comfort of guests and contribute to an overall negative experience.
Several comments also mention the lack of amenities and services. The absence of a restaurant offering hot cooked food is seen as a drawback, especially for guests who prefer a full dining experience within the hotel. The continental breakfast option is also criticized, suggesting that a broader choice would be desirable. Additionally, the lack of central heating and the reliance on electric heaters is seen as an inconvenience.
Communication and customer service seem to be areas that need improvement as well. Guests mention difficulties in contacting the hotel and receiving callbacks, indicating a lack of responsiveness. This can be a major concern for potential guests, particularly when considering hosting important events like a wedding reception.
In conclusion, while the White Hart Hotel has some strengths such as its charming atmosphere, historic significance, and good location, it is outweighed by its weaknesses. The general state of disrepair, lack of cleanliness, absence of key amenities, and inadequate customer service are significant factors that make the hotel less desirable. Improvement in these areas is necessary to provide a more positive and satisfactory experience for guests.

A beautiful room but not practical or clean. No cold water.
Service is basic and no cooked breakfast. Location is perfect.
Was looking to have our wedding reception here but after waiting for someone to call back after leaving a number of messages and now seeing the place, I'll be thinking twice. Patio area covered in weeds and not generally not well looked after throughout the hotel.
A grand old hotel with log fires and panelled walls downstairs. No restaurant these days so, no hot cooked food, but, bed and breakfast good value faire nonetheless. Rooms comfy if a bit worn. Good location to Newhaven Port. Lewes has many good restaurants.
It was OK for 1 night. No central heating so had to ask for an electric heater.
Hotel is generally worn out, ripped net curtains, curtain hanging off the pole. Worn carpets.
Dirty shower cubical.
No restaurant facilities available.
Only continental breakfast available.
I went to Lewes as a bystander trying to understand the attraction of the Lewes boxing day fox hunt event. Only a few horses half with kids on them. I assume the main pack of savages pretending to be trail hunting set off early to carry out their barbaric ritual elsewhere. Lovely old pub though. Pity they have the hunt meet there.
I read some horrible reviews about this hotel the evening before my stay and wondered what I'd let myself in for - gulp.
All I can say is I think you need to come and visit it right now! if you don't then you're going to miss out on exploring this iconic timber beamed early 18th century coaching inn with its rich history, many original features including an enormous open fire in the lounge, great situation on the High Street, and its friendly, helpful staff.
Okay, it is indeed in need of TLC because it's in the process of being sold and not everything is up to standard. However, no problems at all in my quite spartan room. My only comment would be the chipped tea mug... but I do know if I'd had a word with the staff then it would have been replaced immediately. They were at pains to tell me if guests ever have any complaints then they try to deal with them immediately. The swimming pool was really nice, a good size, not over-chlorinated with an ideal temperature, and the sauna was pleasantly hot. In most hotel saunas the temperature is never high enough. The steps from the changing rooms to the pool were quite slippery so I'd advise wearing flip-flops.
I felt privileged to stay at the White Hart Inn with its connection to Thomas Paine, the notorious Revolutionary who wrote the 'Age of Reason' at the end of the 18th century. He formed the 'Headstrong Club' around 1768, which used to meet in the wood-panelled room upstairs (Sheriff's and Tudor rooms). It was from this debating club that led Paine to his association with the American Revolution, and also prison in France. Hotel staff kindly unlocked the room for me to allow me to look - wow!
This hotel could easily become a 5-star hotel if its new owners invest in 'smartening' it up. And then guess what? Most people won't be able to afford to stay here and be deprived of its rich history to be enjoyed by a minority.
Don't waste time - go and stay there now while you can afford it!
Just remember to take your own special mug, flip-flops, and a vase with flowers to brighten up your room.
Very, very run down. The hotel and the “spa” both need to start over. I booked it thinking oh well even if it’s a bit tatty I can have a nice sauna but even that doesn’t really work. Same price as places that are actually nice.
One of the worst hotels I’ve ever stayed in. Don’t stay here. Absolutely woeful. Blood stains on the mattress, floors that haven’t been cleaned in years. To be honest; I saw the hotel room around 9:30pm and within 15 minutes I was in a taxi to another hotel.
