Quick Facts About The Chequers Beer House
The Chequers Beer House has several strengths that make it a popular choice among customers. Firstly, many customers praise it as the best pub in Stevenage, indicating that it has built a strong reputation for quality and service. The fact that it is described as a hidden gem suggests that it may not be well-known to all, but those who do know about it appreciate its offerings.
Another strength of The Chequers Beer House is its wide range of beers. Customers have mentioned trying a variety of ales and beers and have consistently found them to be excellent and reasonably priced. This suggests that the pub takes pride in its selection and ensures that it caters to a diverse range of tastes.
The pub's atmosphere is also highly regarded by customers. Many describe it as having a relaxing and friendly atmosphere, which adds to the overall experience of visiting the pub. The staff are also praised for their welcoming nature, further enhancing the atmosphere of the establishment.
The historic decor of the pub is another strength that is mentioned by customers. This suggests that the pub has a unique and charming ambiance, which sets it apart from other establishments in the area. The combination of the historic decor and the friendly atmosphere creates a pleasant experience for customers.
Additionally, The Chequers Beer House is noted for its mix of customers, with both young and old patrons frequenting the pub. This indicates that the pub attracts a varied clientele and appeals to a wide range of age groups. The presence of a cute and friendly dog behind the bar also adds to the welcoming atmosphere of the pub.
Despite these strengths, there are some weaknesses that have been mentioned by customers. Firstly, The Chequers Beer House does not serve food and only has limited bar snacks such as crisps. This may be a drawback for customers who prefer to have food options available while enjoying a drink.
Another weakness mentioned by a customer is that the coffee machine was out of order on the day they visited. This indicates that there may be occasional issues with the availability of certain beverages, which could potentially affect the overall experience for some customers.
Another minor weakness mentioned is the limited seating, particularly during busy times. Some customers have experienced difficulty finding seating inside the pub and have had to resort to sitting outside. While this may not be a major issue, it can detract from the overall comfort and convenience of the pub.
Overall, The Chequers Beer House has many strengths that contribute to its positive reputation. Its wide range of beers, friendly atmosphere, and historic decor are consistently mentioned as positive aspects of the pub. However, the lack of food options, occasional beverage availability issues, and limited seating during busy times are areas that may need improvement.

Best Pub in Stevenage!
What a hidden (ignored?) gem. Whist my wife ran the Tescos parking gauntlett, I wandered over the bridge into the Old Town. Despite driving around the area on an almost daily basis, I'd forgotten The Chequers existed, and it was on the way to try some other pubs that I spotted it and thought: Why not?
And why not indeed? What a fantastic, reasonably priced establishment with a wide range of beers. I tried the excellent Mild, a rare treat, and only hope that the pubs "off the beaten track" location doesn't threaten it's future.
After I had been summoned to enjoy (?) the delights of Stevenage, I wangled a revisit in order to further sample the wares on offer. Much busier upon my return, the Porter and Stout were in superb form and very reasonably priced.
All too soon I received the call that the Old Lady had negotiated Tescos car park and was waiting outside. Shame. Kindred spirits, Pete and Robin were more than willing to lead me astray. Next time, I hope.
Typical working mens pub, good for beer and soft drink. Does not serve food, have limited bar snacks - crisps and on the day I visited coffee machine was out of order!
Stunning pub. Beautiful historic decor. Great relaxing atmosphere with very welcoming staff. Wonderful selection of guest ales and beers. This is a very highly recommended pub to visit. What more could you want :)
Busy pub, good mix of young and old customers. Cute and friendly dog behind the bar- friendly bar staff. Would go again
Great atmosphere, friendly staff and (the important bit) damn fine beer. What more can you want?
Nice little pub, the heaters outside weren't quite managing to keep us warm at the minute though
Really good selection of ales, and Asahi on tap. Can be difficult to find seating when it's really busy, but a fair amount of seating outside too.
