Quick Facts About King's Mill Reservoir
King's Mill Reservoir has several strengths that make it a popular outdoor space for locals and visitors alike. The first strength is the relaxing circular walk around the reservoir. This 1.3 mile walk provides a peaceful and scenic route, allowing individuals to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy the tranquility of nature. Along the walk, there is plenty of wildlife to witness, creating a unique and immersive experience for nature lovers and enthusiasts.
Another strength of King's Mill Reservoir is the abundance of wildlife present in the area. Many visitors comment on the wide variety of wild water birds that can be seen around the reservoir. This offers an opportunity for birdwatchers to observe and appreciate different species in their natural habitat. The presence of wildlife adds to the overall charm and beauty of the place, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts.
The presence of a decent cafe is also a strength of King's Mill Reservoir. This provides visitors with the option to grab a bite to eat or enjoy a hot beverage before or after their walk. The cafe offers a range of options, including tea, coffee, and cakes, catering to different tastes and preferences. It serves as a convenient and enjoyable addition to the overall experience of visiting the reservoir.
Free parking used to be an advantage of King's Mill Reservoir, although there have been recent changes. The installation of a parking meter has introduced a fee for parking. However, at the time of the last visit, the parking meter was still covered up, indicating that the charging system may not have been implemented yet. This transition suggests that the intention is to generate income to support the maintenance and improvement of the reservoir. While the change may not be universally welcomed, it can be argued that the funds generated from parking fees may be beneficial for the ongoing care and development of the area.
Despite these strengths, there are also some weaknesses associated with King's Mill Reservoir. One weakness mentioned in the comments is the lack of dog waste bins anywhere on the site. This can be problematic for dog owners who need a designated place to dispose of their pets' waste responsibly. The absence of dog waste bins may result in dog waste being left on the paths or surrounding areas, creating an unpleasant and unhygienic environment for other visitors.
Another weakness is the limited number of places to stop for a picnic. While there are lovely places to stop and rest along the reservoir, there is no specific provision for picnickers. This may be disappointing for those who wish to enjoy a leisurely outdoor meal while soaking in the picturesque surroundings. Providing designated picnic areas or benches could enhance the visitor experience and attract more families and groups to spend time at the reservoir.
The proximity of King's Mill Reservoir to busy roads is also seen as a weakness by some visitors. Although the circular walk offers picturesque views over the reservoir, the noise and fumes from nearby traffic can detract from the overall tranquility and natural beauty of the place. This may be particularly noticeable during peak hours or busy traffic periods. Steps to mitigate the impact of the surrounding roads, such as sound barriers or vegetation screens, could help enhance the experience and create a more peaceful environment for visitors.
In summary, King's Mill Reservoir offers several strengths that make it an appealing outdoor space. The relaxing circular walk, abundance of wildlife, and the presence of a decent cafe contribute to the overall allure of the place. However, it is important to consider and address some of the highlighted weaknesses, such as the lack of dog waste bins, limited picnic areas, and the proximity to busy roads. By addressing these issues, King's Mill Reservoir could further improve and enhance the visitor experience, ensuring a positive and enjoyable outing for all.

A relaxing circular walk around the res. Plenty of wildlife. Been doing some work extending the car park and cutting a lot back. Used to be free to park but have now installed a parking meter, although was still covered up when we went last week.
One of my favourite local outdoor spaces, plenty of wild water birds, a decent cafe, and a few other areas and activities I'm yet to explore.

Although near busy roads, the circular 1.3 mile walk is really lovely with lots of wildlife and pretty views over the reservoir. It takes around 30 minutes to complete. So 1 hour free car parking is more than enough time. Really nice place to enjoy nature and unwind.
