Quick Facts About Micklegate Bar
Micklegate Bar is one of the four main gates of York's city walls and is highly praised for its excellent preservation. The fact that the city walls, along with all the gates and towers, have been so well maintained is impressive and makes it a must-visit location. The opportunity to take a guided tour of the exhibition is highly recommended in order to gain additional information about the gate and other wall-related facts. Visitors who took the guided tour were pleased with their experience, especially with the guide named Paul, who was described as excellent. The guide even pointed out All Saints church, allowing visitors to explore the stained glass windows there.
One minor drawback mentioned by a visitor is the additional cost of the guided tour, which seemed to be slightly higher than expected. According to the price list on the leaflet, the tour should have been £8, but it was charged as £9. However, this comment does not diminish the overall positive experience of the guided tour.
Another highlight of Micklegate Bar is the opportunity to walk on the city walls. During the Covid-19 restrictions, it is recommended to walk clockwise on the wall, and from there, visitors can enjoy good views of the railway station, located approximately 200 meters from the steps. This feature allows visitors to have a unique perspective of the city and enjoy the surrounding landscape.
The comments also reveal the international appeal of Micklegate Bar, as there are reviews in German and French. This indicates that the attraction is popular among tourists from different countries, further highlighting its appeal and importance.
One reviewer described Micklegate Bar as the most important of the four gates in York, with its name derived from the word Micklelith, meaning "main street." It served as the main entrance to the city for travelers arriving from the south, including London. The historical significance of Micklegate Bar is evident, as it has been passed through by at least half of the ruling monarchs of England. Each monarch traditionall stopped and sought permission from the city's leader, the mayor, before entering York. The gate itself dates back to the 12th and 14th centuries, with the lower part dating to the 12th century and the upper floors to the 14th century. This historical importance makes Micklegate Bar a must-see for history enthusiasts.
In addition to its historical significance, Micklegate Bar offers a vibrant atmosphere with great pubs to watch football matches. This amenity offers visitors a chance to relax and enjoy a drink with friends while taking in the lively pub atmosphere.
Overall, Micklegate Bar is highly praised for its excellent preservation, historical significance, guided tours, and the opportunity to walk on the city walls. Visitors are encouraged to explore the gate and take in the impressive history and views. While there may be a minor issue with the pricing of the guided tour, it does not detract from the overall positive experience of visiting Micklegate Bar.

Unglaublich wie gut die Stadtmauer mit all seinen Toren und Türmen erhalten ist. Ein Rundgang ist absolut zu empfehlen.
Exhibition itself should be accompanied with the guided tour to get extra information about the gate and other wall related facts. We entered just in time for a tour so worth paying extra for our guide. We had Paul who was excellent. He pointed out All Saints church to look at the stained glass windows, so after the tour we took ourselves off to see that nice little place too.
To add on the tour cost 9 pound on top of the entry visit. Not sure how they got to this math as it should have been only 8 pound extra when looking at the price list on the leaflet
You can take steps up onto the city walls here. It is recommended to walk clockwise on the wall during the covid restrictions. Good views over the railway station about 200 metres from the steps.
Great pubs to watch football!
For anyone who loves history this is a fascinating place. It's where the King's and Queens of England would enter the city of York and where traitors heads were displayed on spikes. If you visit York this is a must see.
