Starting with the strengths, many customers appreciated the decoration of the restaurant, noting that it is nicely decorated, common among Turkish/Kurdish restaurants. The ample seating area and live music on Friday and Saturday nights were also mentioned positively. The short menu was seen as a strength by some, as it made choosing dishes easier.
In terms of food, several customers praised the staples such as lamb ribs and chicken wings, stating that they were cooked to perfection. The lamb's liver and cooked onion salad were also highly recommended by one customer. Many customers mentioned that the staff at Umut Ocakbasi were friendly and accommodating. One customer specifically mentioned that they were nice and accommodating people. Another customer had a positive experience asking for a vegetarian dish, showing that the staff was able to come up with a satisfactory option. The fact that it is an independent local business that is trying hard to survive was also seen as a positive aspect by one customer.
Moving on to the weaknesses of the place, some customers noted that the quality and size of the mixed lamb and chicken shish were not up to par with other similar restaurants on Green Lanes. The chicken was described as a bit dry, and the lamb as stringy. Another customer mentioned that the prices were similar to other places, but the salad and side dishes were better at Umut 2000, another restaurant.
There were also some issues regarding the staff. One customer mentioned that the dark-haired lady was somewhat offhand when asked for sauces, and another customer felt that there wasn't much interaction or communication from the staff, possibly due to a language barrier. One customer expressed disappointment when they weren't offered complimentary tea, which is something that most Turkish restaurants usually offer.
While some customers praised the variety of flavors in the meat and salads, others mentioned that this ocakbasi is very different from the Turkish restaurants on Green Lanes. This could be seen as a weakness if customers were expecting a more traditional Turkish experience.
In conclusion, Umut Ocakbasi in London has both strengths and weaknesses. The decoration, friendly staff, well-cooked staples, and accommodating nature of the restaurant were mentioned positively. On the other hand, issues with food quality and size, as well as some disappointments regarding the staff's behavior and lack of communication, were mentioned as weaknesses. Nicely decorated place (as many of these Turkish/Kurdish restaurants are) with a short menu. Mixed lamb and chicken shish was not the same quality (chicken was a bit dry and lamb was stringy) or size as in similar Green Lanes joints but same kind of prices (eg Umut 2000 offers a better salad and side dishes include grilled onion in pomegranate juice alongside the standard bread and dips).
The grill guys were friendly but when I asked the somewhat offhand dark haired lady for sauces, she brought a small plastic takeaway container of the same chilli sauce as in fried chicken shops (disappointingly not homemade). She also tried to tell me that the cacik dip was actually garlic sauce as if I'd never eaten it before.
This ocakbasi is very different from the Turkish restaurants on Greenlanes. This place has different flavours to the meat and salads. Must try!!
Pretty much everything here is top notch. I particularly like the lamb's liver and cooked onion salad, though if you ask for the esme salad to be spicy, if most certainly is.
The staples such as lamb ribs and chicken wings are cooked to perfection.
We found this after tiring of reducing standards on Tottenham High Road and feeling that Green Lanes is not very authentic any longer. Having spotted this and 'ocakbasi' means something like 'charcoal grill', I felt as though I local restaurant that caters for the community would be authentic and we haven't been disappointed after two visits.
Nice and accommodating people. Food was great, colourful and cheap. I know it's not easy to ask for vegetarian dish in kebab place, but I really like what they came up with :) Will stop by again!
Under rated and a hidden gem. Nice short menu- easy to choose. Ocakbasi style open grill cooking.
Ample seating area. Live music on Friday & Saturday night. Once ordered food came quick.Food and condiments were great ????. Loved the ribs cooked and seasoned to perfection.
Not much interaction /communication from the staffs. Probably due to language barrier. Wasn't offered the complimentary tea most Turkish restaurant offers which was ????. But loads of warm bread compensated for that I guess.
Independent local business trying their hardest to survive. Will definitely be back again soon.
