On the other hand, the weaknesses include the potential danger of falling rocks, limited activities such as no swimming in the area, road conditions that may be challenging for some, graffiti and litter, and the possibility of encountering other vehicles in narrow lanes.
One of the major strengths of Gilman Tunnels is that it is a free attraction. This makes it accessible to a wide range of people, regardless of their socioeconomic status. Additionally, the comments highlight the spectacular views and scenery of Gilman Tunnels, describing it as a must-see and a hidden gem. The tunnels themselves are described as amazing and a unique experience, especially considering how they were made. The presence of a stream of water below adds to the overall appeal and calmness of the place.
Another strength of Gilman Tunnels is the opportunity for exploration. Commenters mention the possibility of walking back through the tunnels or driving to the end and then walking back. This flexibility allows visitors to choose their preferred method of experiencing the place. The presence of a river also provides the potential for white river kayaking, although swimming is not allowed in the area. Furthermore, the comments express appreciation for the ample parking spaces available, making it easy for visitors to access the site.
The overall atmosphere of Gilman Tunnels is depicted as peaceful and calming. The sound of the breeze and running water from the stream below adds to the tranquility of the place. In terms of weaknesses, one of the main concerns raised in the comments is the danger of falling rocks. Although not specified in detail, it implies a potential safety hazard for visitors. This suggests that caution should be exercised when visiting Gilman Tunnels, especially during periods when there are large rocks on the road. Additionally, the comments note the roughness of the falls in the area, highlighting that swimming is not allowed. This limitation may disappoint visitors who were hoping to engage in water-related activities.
Another weakness mentioned is the condition of the roads leading to Gilman Tunnels. Although commenters mention that the roads are easy to get to and drive on, one comment suggests that the road becomes scary as it is made for one car at a time. However, the comments also mention that there are plenty of places to pull to the side, mitigating some of the potential difficulties.
The issue of litter and graffiti is also highlighted as a weakness of Gilman Tunnels. Commenters note the presence of graffiti that mars the beauty of the place, as well as a fair amount of litter. The absence of a garbage receptacle is also noted, suggesting that visitors may be limited in their ability to dispose of their waste properly. However, despite these concerns, commenters still express having a great time and being able to capture lots of photos.
Lastly, commenters mention the possibility of encountering other vehicles in narrow lanes, implying that the road layout may not accommodate multiple cars at once. While some commenters state that they rarely pass a handful of people, it still suggests that there is a risk of encountering other vehicles and potentially causing delays or difficulties when navigating through the area.
In conclusion, Gilman Tunnels offers several strengths, including free access, spectacular views, opportunity for exploration, beautiful scenery, ease of access and parking, and a peaceful atmosphere. However, it also has some weaknesses, such as the potential danger of falling rocks, limited activities, challenging road conditions, graffiti and litter, and the possibility of encountering other vehicles in narrow lanes. Overall, despite these weaknesses, the strengths of Gilman Tunnels make it an attractive and enjoyable destination for those who appreciate natural beauty and adventure.

The best things in life are free!! Check out the Gilman tunnels/ trail. I don't know how to add a video but it was spectacular a must see. If you love exploring ♥️ ✨️ lots too see!! Watch out for falling Rocks ???? there are a few large rocks on the road currently.
It's a really nice hike if you park at the bridge and walk all the way back. But you can drive all the way to the end and then walk back through the tunnels. As far as the river goes I guess you could do some white River kayaking, but no swimming in the area. The falls are really rough. There's a lot of beautiful scenery though around so make sure to get out and look at everything especially the Red rocks.
This was amazing fun! It was so amazing to see the tunnels and how they were made! Also enjoyed seeing the stream of water below! If this was in any National Park, there would be cars lined up all over the place! A nice quiet gem for now !
Finding these tunnels was a pleasant surprise! As you get closer to the tunnels, the road becomes a bit scary because it's made for one car at a time, but there are plenty of places to pull to the side. We had the road to ourselves 99% of the time. It was amazing seeing the roaring Jemez River as it flowed between the canyon. We will definitely be back!
Really easy to get to and some good places to park. The roads are narrow but you can easily get around each other. It’s a hidden gem I barely ever pass a handful of people in the couple hours we spend there!!
It is a beautiful spot and so calming with the sound of the breeze and the running water from the stream below. Some graffiti has marred the beauty and there was a fair amount of litter and no gatbage receptacle in sight, but I still had a great time and got lots of photos. Most of the road jas also been repaved, making it much smoother. Beware of the larger pits in the road between and after the tunnels, and the narrow lane that only allows one vehicle. Courtesy counts!
Once again, NM surprises me! Second time here, but spent longer walking around and really getting a feel for the spot. Great place to take a break while driving thru Jemez. A definite stop
A few locals told us to find this site, and we are glad we did! It was a bit off the beaten path, and we weren't sure where we were going, but a wonderful stop.
Fun to dive through and walk through the tunnels.
