Quick Facts About Hog Pen Barbecue
Hog Pen Barbecue has received a mix of positive and negative comments, which provide insight into its strengths and weaknesses.
Starting with the strengths, it is evident that Hog Pen Barbecue offers high-quality BBQ that is worth the drive. The presence of numerous pickup trucks outside the restaurant during lunchtime indicates that locals find the BBQ to be of good quality. Additionally, the unique homemade BBQ sauce, two types of coleslaw, and flavorful beans add to the appeal of the food. The pecan cobbler dessert is also mentioned as a standout item on the menu.
The cleanliness of the restaurant, including the bathroom, is another positive aspect that is highlighted by a customer. The friendliness and helpfulness of the staff are also mentioned, which contributes to a positive dining experience. The fact that the food is described as "pretty darn good" and "excellent" by different customers shows that the overall quality of the food is consistent and satisfying. The pork steak is specifically mentioned as a standout item that sets Hog Pen Barbecue apart from other BBQ places.
Another strength of Hog Pen Barbecue is its ability to attract visitors from outside the local area. The positive comment from someone traveling from Hot Springs suggests that the restaurant has the potential to draw in customers from a wider radius.
On the other hand, there are some weaknesses that can be inferred from the comments. One customer mentions that the sides and BBQ sauce were good but didn't "blow them away." This suggests that while the food is enjoyable, it may lack the wow factor that some customers are looking for. Another comment mentions that the food was good but "nothing special."
Another potential weakness is the size of the portions. One customer comments that they ordered two BBQ plates expecting to have leftovers for lunch, but found that there was enough BBQ in just one plate. This suggests that the portion sizes may not be generous, which could be a downside for some customers.
Furthermore, the presence of political signs (specifically Trump signs) every 10 feet is mentioned by one customer as a negative aspect of the restaurant. This suggests that the restaurant may have a polarizing atmosphere that could potentially turn off some customers.
One customer expresses disappointment with the food, claiming that it was cooked well before they arrived and the fries were overpriced. While this is a single negative comment, it does indicate that there may be occasional issues with the timeliness and pricing of the food.
In conclusion, Hog Pen Barbecue has several strengths including its high-quality BBQ, unique homemade sauce, cleanliness, friendly staff, and its ability to attract customers from outside the local area. However, potential weaknesses include the lack of a wow factor in the food, potentially small portion sizes, a polarizing atmosphere due to political signs, and occasional issues with timeliness and pricing. Despite these weaknesses, Hog Pen Barbecue generally receives positive feedback and is considered a hidden gem by some.

Well worth the drive from the interstate. Just the number of pickup trucks outside at lunch is a testimony to the quality of the BBQ here. A unique bbq sauce that has to be homemade, two types of coleslaw and beans with a special flavor too. And for desert something I never heard of, pecan cobbler. Sorry no banana pudding. At least not on the menu.
We had a hankering for some BBQ while heading back north from Hot Springs. Being from the Chicago area, it's always interesting to go off the beaten path into more rural/farming communities.
After missing the exit to a BBQ place about 20 miles south, I Googled and located Hog Pen. Stopped in and found the place clean (including the bathroom), the service friendly and informative, and the food pretty darn good. My husband had the half slab of ribs and I had the pork steak... Which I think is one of their specialties.
He seemed to enjoy the ribs and the pork steak was great. Something different than most places offer. The pork steak didn't have tons of fat to cut off, which I appreciated. It was tender enough to not require a knife either. The sides and bbq sauce were good. I wouldn't say they blew me away, but really I had no complaints whatsoever either.
I would definitely stop back again the next time passing through the area.
I ordered 2 bbq plates thinking I could have 1 and take 1 for lunch. There was plenty of bbq in 1. Love the slaw. Ask for an extra bbq so you have plenty. It's a nice little place, and they're friendly.
Some people would call this lovingly, a hole in the wall. I would call it a hidden gem. An old barn or tool building converted to a small, quaint restaurant. We had the sweet tea, pulled pork platter, and rib platter. Sides were baked beans and coleslaw with a side of bread. We also had whole fried okra. BBQ sauces and rubs are on the table. All were excellent. We've been in 12 southern states over the last month. This is in the top two for BBQ places.
I was at Osceola for 7 days, thanks to DMAR people that invited me and i could discovered a great place to eat… I hope back in future… the pork steak plate the best, unfortunately I did not take a picture
Best BBQ’s around. Hospitality was awesome. Owner very friendly and besides for mine, best pork steaks I’ve ever eaten.
The food was good. Could have done without the trump signs every 10 ft. Nothing special.
Terrible all I gotta say $8 for fries and the food was cook way before I showed up….hands down garbage
