In terms of the food, there are both strengths and weaknesses. Many customers enjoyed the hot and sour soup, egg rolls, and wontons, describing them as excellent. The fried dumpling appetizer was also highly praised. These positive comments indicate that the appetizers at Hunan Chinese Restaurant are of high quality and well-liked by customers. Furthermore, the house special chili pot received positive feedback, being described as very good, although not as spicy as expected.
However, there were a few weaknesses mentioned by customers. Some patrons found the spiciness of certain dishes, such as the spicy tofu, to be lacking. This could be seen as a letdown for individuals who enjoy spicier flavors. Another weakness mentioned pertains to the portion size and preparation of certain dishes. Specifically, the chopped chicken and shrimp in the Chef's Special Tofu were criticized for being very small. Additionally, the vegetables in the moo goo gai pan were described as undercooked, resulting in a crunchier texture than expected. These issues with portion size and preparation could be seen as a drawback by some customers.
The decor of Hunan Chinese Restaurant was also brought up as a weakness. While the restaurant was deemed clean, the decor was described as dated and older, potentially giving off a less appealing ambiance. However, some customers still enjoyed the unique touch of their rice being served in the shape of a bear, which added a playful element to the dining experience.
Overall, based on the comments provided, Hunan Chinese Restaurant seems to have more strengths than weaknesses. The cleanliness, good service, and reasonable prices contribute to a positive dining experience. The restaurant's appetizers, such as the fried dumplings, egg rolls, and wontons, are highly regarded by customers. Additionally, the house special chili pot received positive feedback. However, there were some weaknesses mentioned, including the lack of spiciness in certain dishes and the small portion size of certain ingredients. The undercooked vegetables in one dish and the dated decor were also mentioned as areas for improvement. Despite these weaknesses, many customers still expressed their satisfaction and willingness to eat at Hunan Chinese Restaurant again, highlighting its overall positive reputation.

Clean. Good service. Hot food. Spicy wasn't very spicy. Chopped chicken and shrimp in Chef's Special Tofu were VERY small. Mushrooms, tofu and broccoli were excellent. House special chili pot was very good but not spicy. Hot and sour soup wasn't hot either but it was good. Egg rolls and wonton were excellent. Reasonable price.
I'd actually give this more like 3.75 stars.
It wasn't bad. I'd eat there again. If someone asked if they should try it, I'd say yes.
Decor is dated and older seeming (like it's been up for a long time), but the restaurant was clean.
Fried dumpling appetizer was excellent.
I had moo goo gai pan, a dish I order regularly at Chinese restaurants I visit. It tasted good, but veggies were a bit undercooked (so crunchier than I'm used to). My husband had sweet and sour pork that he said was good.
Cute/fun note is how rice was served, in the shape of a bear!????
Server was friendly and helpful. though it did seem like we kept having to ask for everything that should have been anticipated (a knife, only forks were on the table. Then a box at end of the meal). I'm not complaining about the service...it's just not what I'm used to. And again I would like to stress that the server was very friendly and immediately got what we asked for every time we asked for something.
We ordered take out right before they closed tonight. We ordered their shrimp fried rice, wonton soup and hot and sour soup. Great place for Chinese food here.
Great food! Dinner portions were big and
their house hot pot is wonderful. Perfect winter meal!
Ordered the "hot pot" described as Asian shrimp, chicken and tofu. Received the blandest chicken noodles soup. Also left at the wrong hotel room door, no Stix, no chile, and was 30 dollars. Would not recommend delivery.
I ordered empress pork that states “special brown sauce” but what they served was a sweet and sour sauce. Does it look brown in this pic to you? The vegetables were not stir fried, it was steamed or basked in hot water and mixed with the sweet and sour sauce. Some pork tasted old. Steam rice is a little dry. Food overall is bland, a far cry from ur usual chinese resto with lots of seasoning, but for sure thats the taste ive been looking for and was disappointed when i came here. Was a bad experience really
The chili Pot is my favorite to eat here. I've eaten here at least 25 times and inorder the same thing Everytime. You need to try this.
If in Cortez and you have a hankering for Chinese food....this is the spot. The flavor of our food was second to none. The food was hot and fresh. The service was impeccable!
